Dog Breeds

Dog Breeds

While choosing a dog, there are several things that must be kept in mind. The breed size and weight of the dog is very important. If you want to carry a dog in your lap, you may need a smaller dog that can sit quietly for long time, while high energy small dogs are good for traveling and picnics. Giant dogs may eat a lot and need a lot of exercise but may make good guardian dogs or shepherding dogs. However, they need more open space to roam about too. While you may want to buy a highly energetic dog, you may not like to be disturbed constantly to play with your pet. On the other hand, low-energy dogs may irritate children for their lack of movement. Different dog breeds have different exercise requirements.

While some dogs need to do tough activities such as playing football and rock climbing, others dog can be kept fit by merely a stroll in the park. There are dog breeds that do not need much exercise at all, and roaming about in the home is enough for them. There are different reasons to why a person buys a dog. One should buy the dog keeping this reason in mind. The length of fur give a complete different look to the dog and hence, they should also be kept in mind. People who are busy don't like dogs that demand constant attention or lick them a lot. While people who are too busy like to see their canine pet thrive by himself or herself, old people who need love and attention may like dogs who constantly keep dropping balls into their laps as a gesture to plead to play with them.

Old people love dogs that are highly affectionate. They love to see their dogs lick their faces and wag their tails every time they see them. There are people who do not like to be very intimate to their dogs and like to keep a distance. Pets who can be trained easily are the ones that are intelligent, energetic and willing to please. If you have other pets at home, you may like a dog that is friendly with smaller species too such as cats and rats. However, if you are buying a dog to keep them off your place, you may need a dog jealous of other species. Other things to keep in mind are the strength, boldness, protectiveness and courage of the dog, how often it needs to be groomed and whether the particular dog breed will be able to tolerate the temperature of the place, where it has to live.

Dog Bath

Dog Bath

As the myth goes, it is not healthy to bathe a dog frequently. A part of it is true and other part is not. While swimming in natural water is a good exercise for a dog and can be permitted according to its tastes and climate, using soaps or shampoos on dogs regularly can be hazardous. Especially human shampoos can cause an imbalance of sweat on dog's skin and may make its skin dry and itchy, though, mild human shampoos can be used once a month. However, dog-specific shampoos are much better and are recommended to be used only once every several weeks. The medicated shampoos meant to cure particular skin-disorders are different and the frequency of their use depends on the condition of the dog.

It is best to bathe the dog only when its coat becomes greasy or you are about to have a company. Dog odor is also a sign that your dog needs a bath. Mud tends to dry up and fall off the dog's coat by itself as it rubs it on. To bathe the dog, lay a blanket or the floor and keep two towels, dog shampoo, dog conditioner and a washcloth ready by the bathtub. Keep the dog's brush, comb and trash bag on the blanket. Special super-absorbent towels are quite helpful in drying the dog quickly. If the dog's coat is matted, brush him first to untangle the knots and then bathe him. The dogs that get too scared in the tub and keep jumping around, you might try to give him the shower with the hand-held showerheads. Being able to stand on firm ground, will keep him feeling safe.

Inside the tub, you can put a non-slippery rubber bath mat to keep your pooch from slipping. Large dogs can be bathed in the garden using a hose and a bucket, especially when the weather is hot. Don't dump water on dog's face and use a washcloth instead, for the ears of the dog shouldn't get too wet inside and he generally gets too scared when doused over the head and may get aggressive. A good dog shampoo is the best choice but a baby shampoo or a mild herbal shampoo can also be used occasionally. Conditioner helps to prevent tangles, in the dogs with long hair. Good shampooing, rinsing and condition of the dog's skin and coat keep lice and fleas away from dogs. Deodorants can be used to keep off the body odor and keep your dog smelling fresh and healthy.

There are shampoos that claim to be gentle yet effective, perform antibacterial action, have pearlescent whiteners for that shiny sparkling whiteness in the coat and gentle aloe Vera and tea tree oil to keep the skin healthy. Dogs with black and dark colored coats can use special shampoos with them that enhance their natural shine. After lathering and cleaning the dog, rinsing is very important for any shampoo residue may cause skin irritation. Shampoos mild for eyes are recommended. Dogs often give a good shake, soaking you and the room. You can dry your pet using one end of a first towel over his head and drying him with the other end. The second towel is used to pick him up. After drying, lay your dog on the blanket and keep him there until he dries completely.

Dog collar

Dog collars are not so simple as they seem. There are many different types of dog collars available in the market to suit different functions and needs. Different kinds of dogs need to be harnessed using different dog collars. The independent and intelligent dog breeds such as Boxers need firm and fair training to be obedient and learn good manners. These dogs can be friendly and quite useful once trained properly but do not like to be ordered around. To choose a right collar, you must read this article that details the uses of different types of collars:

* Buckle Collars

Buckle collars have are meant to be buckled to fasten them and are mostly made up of nylon, cotton, or leather. They can both be flat or rolled and are quite adjustable. Buckle collars are adjustable and do not strangle dogs. Rolled leather collars are better than flat ones as they avoid chafing or hair breakage.

* Quick-Release Collars

Flat nylon buckle collars have plastic fastenings that help to put on and take off the collar quickly. These are adjustable too and do not tighten around dog's necks.

* Break-away Collars

It is a quick-release collar and is meant to help the dog pull itself free, if the need be. Its inventor was inspired to design it after his dog get choked to death because the collar he was wearing got caught on something. However, if attached to a leash, the collar will not open, giving you the freedom to control the dog, when you are with him.

* Slip Collars

Slip collars are also known as choke chains or chokers. They can be made of braided nylon, cotton, metal or leather and have 'O' rings at either end. The collar is looped through one of the rings. The collar can be tightened and loosened with pressure from the lead. Attaching the lead to the floating ring or the dead ring will prevent the collar from tightening.

* Choke Chains

The metal training slip collars known as choke chains are still in use as the primary training tools for the dog. They are used to give dogs a jerk, if they do not obey a command but are not advisable as they may cause neck, back and tracheal injuries to dogs and may also cause them trauma. Only qualified, experienced instructors may use them with care. Width and weight of the links decide the type of chokers to be chosen for the dog. Heavy chains need collars with rough sliding. They are the training collars and must never be used on puppies. Tags should not be attached to chokers. Long-haired dogs need wide-link chokers.

* Prong or Pinch Collars

These training collars are much safer than the chokers and do not cause neck, back or tracheal injuries. However, since they are may get worn and stretched and thus spring open, they can only be used with a back-up collar hooked to the leash. Not intended for puppies, they should only be used carefully.

* Head Halters

Head halters are much like halters used for horses and are meant for dogs that pull. They sit right below the dog's eyes and thus are uncomfortable to most dogs. They should not be confused for muzzles as they allow the dog to drink, eat, bark or bite. It is to be used when the dog is walking at your side and not trying to escape from you.

* Harnesses

Harnesses are used for sled and carting dogs to help them pull and is the most effective means to distribute weight evenly. It enables the dog to pull many times its own body weight

* Electronic Collars

'Remote' collars or 'shock' collars deliver an electrical stimulus to the dog in training as a 'correction method'. The intensity of the stimulus starts from low level to high, depending on the disobedience of the dog. These training-only collars should only be used by professionals or may have destructive effect on dog's self confidence, desire to work and general good will.

Collars should fit well and especially the non-slip collars should be loose enough to leave two-finger width space between the collar and the neck of the dog. Improperly fitted collars and their incorrect usage may even prove fatal to dogs.

Dog Clothes

Dog Clothes
Furry dogs are as stylish as they come but humans have infectious fantasy world of their own and even dogs take on some of the spirit of their owners and like to wear clean beautiful outfits sometimes. The dog clothes must be easily washable and should not shrink easily. Fabric is very important and if you can sew a little, it can save you much money and come up with better designs and patterns to suit your tastes and your dog's comfort. Avoid using choking hazards to decorate dog clothes such as attractive buttons, sequins or glittering objects that may motivate the togs to chew upon the clothes. Velcro snaps are much better to be used in dog clothes, as they are self-sticking and are quite adjustable to allow for the perfect fit. The clothes should also have a slit or a buckle at the back to allow the leash to be attached to it. The distance between the cuts for the paws should be comfortable for your dog.

Clothes for active dogs and outdoor wear for dogs should be safe and warm. They should be sturdy enough to keep of cuts, scratches and bad weather from affecting your dog while on adventure. Dog garments can be of many types such as dog coats, dog vests and dog booties. They should be able to keep your pooch dry, warm and save it from rain, wind and storm. Latest style of dog clothes may also include reflective materials that make it easy to search the dog and stitching that is not visible on top. Clothes for active dogs are designed especially to keep them from getting scratches and cuts in the woods by the sharp bushes and splintering brambles. Even the long furry dogs may need coats to protect them from chilly winds in cold weather.

The clothes for dogs should have a good fitting. Their coats, vests, boots and hats should not be very tight but should remain securely in place while the dog is on hunt or a hike with you. Rough bushes and elements of weather can be as much a pain in neck as they are to you, so the clothes for outdoors must be sturdy enough to protect them. The type of coat also determines the types of clothes chosen for a dog. Dogs with short hair may suffer more from rain and cold while thick fur may absorb lots of water. Fleece dog clothing is suitable for cold windy days but are not good enough for rain and thorns. For maximum protection, you may choose a dog coat with a warm fleece lining and a durable nylon shell.

A raincoat for a dog can protect him from the rain and cold too. Choose a raincoat with a hat with flaps to cover the ears. A coat that extends to the underside of the dog must have a hole at the rear end to allow the dog to urinate. Thorns and bugs away from the long fur of your canine pal is quite a bonus too. The clothes should allow a full range of motion and should not restrict its motions, especially those of legs. Garments must have clean lines and invisible close stitching that won't get caught easily or may not prompt dog to chew upon. Clothes for particular breeds of dogs are also available at bigger pet stores. They are specially designed to suit their needs and comforts.

Aggressive Dog Behavior

Aggressive behavior in dogs is very common and is noticed in almost all the breeds. Often your canine companion might growl, bark, snarl, snap, bare teeth or even bite other dogs or even humans. Sometimes a dog might use aggressive behavior as a tool to terrorize/ harm others. But a dog that constantly exhibits aggressive behavior might pose a lot of problems for its owner. The presence of an aggressive dog in the family can be quite a menace. Such a perilous behavior might also deeply injure the bond that you share with your pet. Taming an aggressive dog, demands that you properly understand how to tackle such a problem. In the following lines, we help you to understand your dog better, by detailing the various types of aggressive dog behavior and ways of controlling the same.

Types of Aggressive Dog Behavior

Dominance Aggression
When a dog is aggressive because he demands obedience, it is dominance aggression. Here the dog loves to be the undisputed king of the household and will often be deaf to your commands. He will exhibit aggressive behavior when asked to do certain things or even when patted or groomed.

Territorial (Overprotective) Aggression
A dog might become aggressive, when he believes that someone is violating or intruding his personal space/ belongings. Sometimes, the animal gets aggressive without the presence of any actual threat. Such an animal is guided by a sense of excessive protection for his house/ owner from other people or animals.

Fear Aggression
Sometimes a dog tries to be aggressive in order to screen his own fear, nervousness and insecurities. Such a dog reacts to anything and everything. Any sort of disturbance in the surroundings alerts him and makes him exhibit aggressive behavior. He might even bite if you try to pacify him.

Predatory Aggression
This is also a potentially dangerous aggressive behavior in dogs. Here, the dog's aggression is triggered by anything that moves. One can witness this behavior with street dogs that chase moving vehicles. Sometimes such an animal might chase playing children, joggers or even normal pedestrians.

Punishment Aggression
Some owners mete out severe punishment to their dogs that can at times turn out to be unhealthy and dangerous. Such behaviors from their owner might undermine the dog's confidence. The dog may see his master as a source of threat, and retaliate by displaying aggressive behavior sooner or later.

Pain Aggression
}Sometimes a dog might react aggressively when you touch him in sensitive, infected or cramped areas. Various illnesses (arthritis, ear problems, and hip dysphasia) also make his temperament foul and vicious. Thus, such an aggressive behavior is the off-shoot of pain.

Maternal Aggression
Such an aggressive behavior is noticed in females, when they rear and feed their new born pups. She might instinctively exhibit aggression if any human or animal approaches the whelping area. Maternal aggression slowly disappears in the mother as her puppies grow.

Dog Aggression
Such dog-to-dog aggression is noticed in puppies while they play and learn. It should be curbed at once. Such behavioral patterns, if left unattended, give rise to adult dogs that can be highly dangerous. Dog-to-dog fights generally take place for various reasons like territory, food, dominance or fear.

Redirected Aggression
An already aggressive dog might redirect his aggression to anyone. In this form of aggression, the dog is already aroused/ agitated and tries to harm whoever tries to interfere with or put an end to his aggression. Thus, it is always better to find out what is the primary stimulus of the dog's aggression and treat/ prevent it.

Stopping Aggressive Dog Behavior

* Let the dog know and understand his position in the family.
* Select the right breed of dog that suits your lifestyle and habits.
* Never make your dog a part of aggressive games and play.
* Provide your dog with rewards for displaying good behavior.
* Mild discipline should always be maintained.
* Provide him enough mental and physical exercise.
* Don't pat or praise him excessively, without any reason.
* Don't mete out unwarranted punishment on your dog.
* Don't leave the dog unsupervised with strangers and small children.
* Consult your veterinarian and appoint a good trainer.

We see that a dog might be aggressive due to various reasons. Thus, it is very important that you delve into your pet's psychology to understand what exactly is making him aggressive. Leashing an aggressive dog in a secluded corner or meting corporal punishment will do no good. Try the above tricks and be the happy owner of a happy dog.

Dog Care

Dog Care

Dogs and humans have been best friends for long. While dogs give unconditional love, loyalty and friendship to their owners, we are responsible for their proper care, food and water, shelter, safety, regular veterinary care and exercise. Here are some tips to take good care of your dogs:

* Collar your dog and attach an ID to it with the dog's name, your name, address, and telephone number. These tags are a great help when a dog gets lost to take him safely back to his home.
* Legal requirements for adopting the dog and obtaining tags are quite essential. Get your dogs vaccinated against rabies and other diseases at the correct time.
* A valid-license and a rabies and ID tag does not mean that you can let your dog roam freely anywhere. Once off your property, the dog must always be on leash.
* Proper shelter for a dog may include a fence yard and a doghouse for large and active dogs. However, most dogs crave for companionship and do not like to be alone for long periods of time outside the home. The family should spend some time with him too.
* Regular veterinarian check-ups will keep your dog healthy.
* If you do not want to breed the dog, get it neutered, which is just a routine surgery. It helps your dog to live longer, be healthier and have fewer behavior problems.
* A nutritionally balanced diet with constant access to fresh water is as good for your dog, as it is for you.
* Trained dogs behave better and share greater bonding with their owners. Use positive reinforcement training techniques to train the dog.
* Walk your dog twice a day to exercise your dog and keep him physically fit. However, the level of exercise depends on the breed and age of the dog.
* Be as loyal and faithful to your canine as you expect him to be to you. Any persistent behavior problems should be brought to the notice of your veterinarian.
