Alaskan Malamute

Alaskan Malamute

Breed Type: Working

Weight: 85 lbs for Males, 75 lbs for Females

Height: 25 inches for Males, 23 inches for Females

Coat type: Thick and coarse outer coat and greasy and wooly undercoat.

Color: The color of these dogs may vary from white light gray to black, sable or red with shading. White shading and a white mask or cap is common too.

Nature: One of the oldest Arctic dogs used on sled dogs, it was named after the native Innuit tribe called Mahlemuts. These people were settled along the shores of Kotzebue Sound in the upper western part of Alaska. Friendly, affectionate, and loyal, don't expect this dog to be a blind follower. They are friendly with children too and it is this friendliness, which reduces their watchdog ability. They need firm training.

Grooming: Little grooming is needed to keep this dog breed in good shape. Brushing the hair of the dog with a coarse comb while it is shedding is good enough.

Exercise: Hardy Alaskan Malamutes need at least one hour of hard exercise daily to keep fit.
